About Victorian Disability Worker Commission (VDWC)
The Victorian Disability Worker Commission is the first regulator of its kind in Australia and regulates all disability workers in Victoria, regardless of how they are funded.
The Commission was established to reduce abuse and neglect of people with disability and increase the safety and professionalism of the disability workforce. The Commission carries out a number of reforms, including a Code of Conduct for all workers in Victoria, an independent complaints service, mandatory notifications and disability worker registration.
The Commission can take complaints from anyone about any disability worker in the state. In addition to complaints, the Commission receives mandatory notifications from disability employers and workers relating to serious misconduct. The Commission has a wide range of ways to respond to and deal with complaints and notifications, with the most powerful response being a prohibition order from the Commissioner which bans a worker from working anywhere in the Victorian sector.
Disability worker registration is voluntary and allows disability workers to demonstrate that they meet higher standards of safety and quality. Registration provides greater checks than the NDIS Worker Screen and aims to professionalise the sector and also acknowledge workers for the crucial work they do.
